Koalas surround Sydney, with populations in South-West Sydney & North-West Sydney, Sutherland Shire, Hawkesbury, Blue Mountains, the Southern Highlands, Cessnock, Mudgee and Port Stephens. Most of these Koalas live outside of National Parks, and are being assailed by habitat removal, urban and industrial development, and road strikes.

Sydney Basin's Koalas are being assailed by habitat removal, urban development and road strikes. We need a package of protections to stop their precipitous decline. Despite Koalas being recognised as a matter of National Environmental Significance, removal of their habitat has been approved by the Federal Environment Minister at pace.
The recent story on ABC NSW: The Sydney suburban sprawl that’s a death zone for koalas exposed this serious situation, including up to 60% of the Campbelltown population being hit by motor vehicles in the last 6 years.
The next federal government can help save Sydney's Koalas by:
ensuring all linking habitat corridors in the Sydney Basin (including Mallaty Creek in Campbelltown) are protected to ensure Koala populations can grow and increase genetic diversity
funding best practice road overpasses and underpasses
stopping damaging development directly on Koala habitat
providing funds for land acquisition of strategic importance to Koalas
urgently reform the EPBC Act to strengthen laws to protect Koalas
